من أعظم شعراء الجاهلية، اشتُهر بشعر الحكمة والتعاليم الأخلاقية. تُحتفى معلقته بتأملاتها العميقة في الحرب والسلام وطبيعة الإنسان. كان يقضي عامًا كاملًا في صقل كل قصيدة.

One of the greatest pre-Islamic poets, known for his wisdom poetry and moral teachings. His Mu'allaqa is celebrated for its profound reflections on war, peace, and human nature. He would spend a year perfecting each poem.

سَئِمْتُ تَكَالِيفَ الحَيَاةِ وَمَنْ يَعِشْ

وَمَنْ يَجْعَلِ المَعْرُوفَ مِنْ دُونِ عِرْضِهِ

وَمَنْ يَكُ ذَا فَضْلٍ فَيَبْخَلْ بِفَضْلِهِ
Whoever has abundance yet withholds it from his people Will be dispensed with and blamed
رَأَيْتُ المَنَايَا خَبْطَ عَشْوَاءَ مَنْ تُصِبْ
I saw that death strikes blindly: whom it hits, it kills And whom it misses lives long and grows old
وَمَا كُلُّ ذِي لُبٍّ بِمُؤْتِيكَ نُصْحَهُ
Not everyone with reason gives you their advice Nor is everyone who gives advice wise
وَأَعْلَمُ عِلْمَ اليَوْمِ وَالأَمْسِ قَبْلَهُ

وَأَبْيَضَ فَيَّاضٍ يَدَاهُ غَمَامَةٌ
A bright one whose hands are clouds Over his seekers, whose favors do not cease
وَنَفْسُكَ فَاحْفَظْهَا وَصُنْهَا مِنَ الرَّدَى
And your soul, guard it and protect it from ruin For if you lose it, you will not find another
وَاعْلَمْ بِأَنَّ الحِلْمَ زَيْنُ صَاحِبِهِ
Know that forbearance adorns its owner And that ignorance destroys who possesses it
