أعظم شعراء تونس، توفي شابًا في الخامسة والعشرين. قصيدته «إرادة الحياة» صارت نشيد الثورات العربية. ألهمت قوميته الرومانسية أجيالاً.

إِذَا الشَّعْبُ يَوْمًا أَرَادَ الحَيَاةَ
If the people one day desire life
Fate must surely respond
وَلا بُدَّ لِلَّيْلِ أَنْ يَنْجَلِي
The night must surely clear away
And the shackle must surely break
سَأَعِيشُ رَغْمَ الدَّاءِ وَالأَعْدَاءِ
I will live despite disease and enemies
Like an eagle above the lofty peak
