- وُلد في الكوفة عام 303هـ/915م
- لُقب بالمتنبي لادعائه النبوة في شبابه (رواية مختلف فيها)
- خدم سيف الدولة الحمداني في حلب تسع سنوات
- انتقل إلى مصر وخدم كافور الإخشيدي ثم هجاه
- قُتل على يد قطّاع طرق قرب دير العاقول عام 354هـ/965م

الْخَيْلُ وَاللَّيْلُ وَالْبَيْدَاءُ تَعْرِفُنِي
The horse, the night, and the desert know me
As do the sword, the spear, the paper, and the pen
إذا رأيت نيوب الليث بارزة
When you see the fangs of a lion exposed
Do not suppose that the lion is smiling
ذو العقل يشقى في النعيم بعقله
The wise one suffers in bliss because of his mind
While the ignorant one enjoys himself in misery
إذا غامرت في شرف مروم
If you venture for noble heights
Do not be content with anything less than the stars
وإذا كانت النفوس كباراً
When souls are great
Bodies grow weary in pursuit of their goals
وَمَنْ يَكُ ذَا فَمٍ مُرٍّ مَرِيضٍ
