مؤسس المذهب الشافعي في الفقه الإسلامي. وُلد في غزة ودرس في مكة واشتُهر بعبقريته الفقهية. شعره مليء بالحكمة والزهد والنصح بمكارم الأخلاق.

Founder of the Shafi'i school of Islamic law. Born in Gaza, he studied in Mecca and became renowned for his legal genius. His poetry is filled with wisdom, asceticism, and advice on noble character.

دَعِ الأَيَّامَ تَفْعَلُ مَا تَشَاءُ
Let the days do what they will And be content when fate decrees
وَلا تَجْزَعْ لِحَادِثَةِ اللَّيَالِي
Do not despair at night's events For the events of this world do not last
وَكُنْ رَجُلًا عَلَى الأَهْوَالِ جَلْدًا
Be a man steadfast against terrors And let your character be generosity and loyalty
إِذَا نَطَقَ السَّفِيهُ فَلا تُجِبْهُ
When the fool speaks, do not answer him For silence is better than answering him
فَإِنْ كَلَّمْتَهُ فَرَّجْتَ عَنْهُ
For if you speak to him you relieve him But if you leave him he dies of vexation
وَمَنْ يَبْتَغِي العِلْمَ يُصْبِحْ رَفِيعًا
Whoever seeks knowledge becomes elevated And whoever leaves their homeland becomes a master
تَصَفَّحْتُ أَحْوَالَ الزَّمَانِ فَلَمْ أَجِدْ
I examined the conditions of time and found None but God as my helper and supporter
وَإِذَا العِنَايَةُ لاحَظَتْكَ عُيُونُهَا
When the eyes of Providence watch over you Sleep, for all events are safety
إِنَّ لِلَّهِ عِبَادًا فُطَنَا
God has servants who are perceptive They divorced the world and feared temptations
نَظَرُوا إِلَيْهَا فَأَبْصَرُوهَا لَيْسَتْ
They looked at it and saw it is not For a permanent resident, so they made it a path
لا تَحْقِرَنَّ صَغِيرَةً إِنَّ الجِبَالَ
Do not despise a small thing, for mountains Are made of pebbles and seas of droplets
وَأَحْسَنُ مَنْ سَبْعِينَ سَنَةً وَنَيِّفٍ
Better than seventy-some years Is to spend them in truthfulness without weariness
لا تَطْلُبِ الفَضْلَ مِمَّنْ لَيْسَ يَفْهَمُهُ
Do not seek virtue from one who does not understand it Is it not wrong to advise the deaf?
اِصْبِرْ عَلَى البَلْوَى فَإِنَّ وَرَاءَهَا
Be patient with tribulation, for behind it Is relief, provision, and blessings that follow
عَوِّدْ لِسَانَكَ قَوْلَ الخَيْرِ تَحْظَ بِهِ
Train your tongue to say good and you will attain it For the tongue is accustomed to what you…
تُرِيدُ الحَيَاةَ وَلا تَعْمَلُ لَهَا
You want life yet do not work for it And the ship does not sail on dry land
لا تَسْتَحِ مِنْ إِعْطَاءِ القَلِيلِ
Do not be ashamed of giving little For deprivation is less than it
إِذَا لَمْ تَخْشَ عَاقِبَةَ اللَّيَالِي
If you do not fear the consequences of nights And have no shame, then do as you wish
يَخَاطِبُنِي السَّفِيهُ بِكُلِّ قُبْحٍ
The fool addresses me with every ugliness But I hate to answer him
يَزِيدُ سَفَاهًا وَأَزِيدُ حِلْمًا
He increases in folly and I increase in forbearance Like incense that burning makes more fragrant
نَعِيبُ زَمَانَنَا وَالعَيْبُ فِينَا
We blame our time when the fault is in us And our time has no fault except us
نُحِبُّ الذَّمَ فِي النَّاسِ وَنَكْرَهُ
We love to blame people yet hate That anything be said about us
وَلا تَجْزَعْ مِنَ الأَيَّامِ إِنْ قَسَتْ
Do not despair of the days if they are harsh Perhaps time's hardship will become ease
كُنْ كَالنَّخِيلِ عَنِ الأَحْقَادِ مُرْتَفِعًا
Be like palm trees, rising above grudges Thrown at with rocks, yet dropping the sweetest fruit
خَالِفِ النَّفْسَ تَغْنَمْ فَإِنَّمَا
Oppose the self and you will profit For it is a commanding self, commanding evil
وَقِيلَ الحَقُّ مُرٌّ فَاحْتَمِلْهُ
Truth is said to be bitter, so bear it And if speech becomes bitter, do not tire of it
لا تَظْلِمَنَّ إِذَا مَا كُنْتَ مُقْتَدِرًا
Do not oppress when you have power For oppression's pasture leads to regret
طُوبَى لِمَنْ شَغَلَتْهُ عُيُوبُهُ
Blessed is the one whose own faults Occupy them from people's faults at all times
لا يَنْفَعُ الدَّرْسُ إِلَّا مَعَ عَمَلٍ
Study is useless without action And knowledge benefits not without manners
شَكَوْتُ إِلَى وَكِيعٍ سُوءَ حِفْظِي
I complained to Waki' of my poor memory So he guided me to abandon sins
وَأَخْبَرَنِي بِأَنَّ العِلْمَ نُورٌ
And he told me that knowledge is light And God's light is not given to a sinner
وَمَنْ لَمْ يَصُنْ نَفْسَهُ عَنِ المَعَاصِي
Whoever does not guard themselves from sins Should not blame time when it turns
رَأَيْتُ السُّكُوتَ عَلَى الجَاهِلِينَ جَوَابًا
I saw silence toward the ignorant as an answer For if you speak to them, you are burdened
أَخُو الجَهْلِ يَفْخَرُ وَالعَالِمُ يَخْفِضُ
The ignorant one boasts while the scholar is humble This is like the Pleiades and the earth
تَعَلَّمْ فَلَيْسَ المَرْءُ يُولَدُ عَالِمًا
Learn, for a person is not born knowing And the knowledgeable is not like the ignorant
اصْبِرْ عَلَى مُرِّ الجَفَا مِنْ مُعَلِّمٍ
Bear the bitterness of harshness from a teacher For knowledge's deposit is in its difficulties
وَمَنْ لَمْ يَذُقْ مُرَّ التَّعَلُّمِ سَاعَةً
Whoever does not taste the bitterness of learning for an hour Swallows the humiliation of…
وَإِنْ كَثُرَتْ عُيُوبُكَ فِي البَرَايَا
If your faults are many among people And you wish them to be covered
تَسَتَّرْ بِالسَّخَاءِ فَكُلُّ عَيْبٍ
Cover yourself with generosity, for every fault Is covered by generosity, as they say
إِذَا هَبَّتْ رِيَاحُكَ فَاغْتَنِمْهَا
When your winds blow, seize them For every flutter has a stillness
أَلا إِنَّ الفَقِيرَ فَقِيرُ عِلْمٍ
Indeed the poor one is poor in knowledge Poverty is not in lack of wealth
لا يُعْجِبَنَّكَ مِنْ خَطِيبٍ خُطْبَةٌ
Let not an orator's speech impress you Until they are authentic with their words
بِقَدْرِ لُغَاتِ المَرْءِ يَكْثُرُ نَفْعُهُ
By the measure of a person's languages is their benefit And those are their helpers in adversities
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ الفَقْرَ يُرْجَى لَهُ الغِنَى
Have you not seen that poverty may hope for wealth And wealth may fear falling into poverty?
لَوْ كَانَ عِلْمٌ بِغَيْرِ تَقًى
If knowledge were without piety It would be misguidance even if you sought it
الصِّدْقُ عِزٌّ وَالكَذِبُ ذُلٌّ
Truthfulness is honor and lying is humiliation So choose for yourself what you love
فَإِنْ كُنْتَ لا تَدْرِي وَلَمْ تَكُ بِالَّذِي
If you do not know and are not one who Asks those who know, then how will you learn?
لَيْسَ الغَرِيبُ غَرِيبَ الشَّامِ وَاليَمَنِ
