شاعر وفيلسوف سوري ضرير، عاش منعزلًا خمسين عامًا. لُقِّب بـ«رهين المحبسَين»، يتساءل شعره عن العقائد ويحتفي بالعقل. تحتوي لزومياته على تأملات عميقة في الفناء وحماقات البشر.
The blind Syrian poet-philosopher who lived as a recluse for fifty years. Called 'the Lucretius of Islam,' his poetry questions dogma and celebrates reason. His Luzumiyyat contains profound meditations on mortality and human folly.

تَعَبٌ كُلُّهَا الحَيَاةُ فَمَا أَعْجَبُ
All of life is weariness, so I only wonder
At one who desires more of it
وَلَمَّا رَأَيْتُ الجَهْلَ فِي النَّاسِ فَاشِيًا
When I saw ignorance widespread among people
I feigned ignorance until they thought me ignorant
هَذَا جِنَايَةُ أَبِي عَلَيَّ
This is my father's crime against me
And I have committed no crime against anyone
غَيْرُ مُجْدٍ فِي مِلَّتِي وَاعْتِقَادِي
Neither the wailing of a mourner nor the melody of a singer
Is of any use in my creed and belief
إِذَا كَانَ لا يَحْظَى بِرِزْقِكَ عَاقِلٌ
If the wise do not attain Your provision
And You provide for the mad and the fool
أَغَايَةُ الدِّينِ أَنْ تُحْفُوا شَوَارِبَكُمْ
Is the goal of religion to trim your mustaches?
O nation at whose ignorance nations have laughed
خَفِّفِ الوَطْءَ مَا أَظُنُّ أَدِيمَ
Tread lightly, for I believe the earth's surface
Is made only of these bodies
صَاحِ شَمِّرْ وَلا تَزَلْ ذَاكِرَ المَوْتِ
Friend, prepare and never cease remembering death
For forgetting it is clear misguidance
وَمَنْ نَكَّدَ الدُّنْيَا عَلَى نَفْسِهِ وَلَمْ
Whoever makes the world bitter for himself and does not
Adorn it lives in it a life of hardship
تَشَابَهَ دَمْعٌ فِي العُيُونِ تَحَيُّرًا
Tears resemble each other in bewildered eyes
Though some tears are more tender than others
يَسُوسُونَ الأُمُورَ بِغَيْرِ عَقْلٍ
They manage affairs without reason
Yet their command is executed and they are called leaders
إِذَا وَصَفَ الطَّائِيُّ بِالبُخْلِ مَادِرٌ
When the prodigal accuses the generous of miserliness

اثْنَانِ أَهْلُ الأَرْضِ ذُو عَقْلٍ بِلا
The people of earth are two: one of intellect without

فَلا تَفْرَحْ بِرُزْءِ أَخِيكَ يَوْمًا
Do not rejoice at your brother's calamity one day
For you may be tested with what befell him
وَالمُزَاحُ حُمْقٌ إِنْ زَادَ عَنْ حَدِّهِ
Joking is folly if it exceeds its limit
And seriousness bears no fruit when excessive
نُسِرُّ بِالأَحْيَاءِ جَهْلًا وَنَبْكِي
We rejoice in the living out of ignorance and weep
For the dead while they have found rest
مَا طَارَ طَيْرٌ وَارْتَفَعَ إِلَّا كَمَا
No bird flies and rises except that
As it flew, it falls to earth sometime
أَرَى حَيَاتَنَا مَا هِيَ إِلَّا
I see our life is nothing but
A sleep, and death is the awakening
وَكَمْ مِنْ عَالِمٍ مُتَفَنِّنٍ
How many a learned, versatile scholar
Has luck thrown from atop his throne
وَالدَّهْرُ يُعْطِيكَ مِنْ حَيْثُ لا تَحْتَسِبُ
Fate gives you from where you do not expect
And prevents you from what you hoped and sought
وَقَدْ كُنْتُ أَرْجُو أَنْ أَعِيشَ سَالِمًا
I used to hope to live safely
